Production:

 

            The industry in this sector is at an early stage of development and mainly consists of processing Toilet tissues, Facial Tissues, Napkins, Household towels rolls, Exercise books, fax, telling and adding machine rolls, Photocopy paper and ruled papers, Sanitary pads, Carton boxes, etc. The country is still relying more on import of paper and paper products.

The trend of Ethiopian imports of Paper and Paper products in the last five years is increasing.  While in 2004 the total Ethiopian imports were US$48.5 million, it increased to US$56.5 million in 2005, hence, showing an increase of 16.5 per cent.  In 2006, the increase was 29 per cent over 2005.

Indonesia, India, Sweden and China are the major exporting countries supplying Paper & Paper products to Ethiopia.  Their market share in Ethiopian imports was 57.2% (Indonesia 19.1%, India 15.6%, Sweden 11.3%, and China 11.2%).  The other major exporting countries with their share: U.A.E., Singapore, Egypt, Germany, Malaysia, UK, Saudi Arabia and Belgium in that order.

India’s export in this sector cover Waste/scrap paper, Old newspaper, Newsprint, Hand made paper, Printing paper, Toilet paper, Kraft paper, Self copying paper, Copying or transfer papers, Photocopy paper, Tracing papers, Wall paper, Duplicator stencil of paper, Envelopes, Letter cards, Cartons, boxes and cases, Household or hospital sanitary articles, Packing containers, Register, account books, Order and Exercise books, Binders, Folders, book covers, Bobbins, spools, Filter paper, Self adhesive paper, Cigarette papers, Labels, Stickers, Paper poster, Gift wrapper, Visiting cards, Album,  Printed candy and toffee wrapping papers, etc.

 

There is a continuing increasing trend in Indian export of paper and paper products to Ethiopia.  While in 2004, Indian export was US$8.1 million, it increased to US$8.8 million in 2005 showing an increase of 8.6%. In the year 2006, India export was US$12 million and accounted 16.5% of the total Paper and paper products imports into the country.

Analyzing the above figures, it is noted that Indian exports of paper products to Ethiopia have an increasing trend for the last three years.  In 2006-07, Paper products are the 6th largest export item from India to Ethiopia.
