Special Envoy of Government of India to Attend The Funeral of The Late Prime Minister Meles

Special Envoy of the Government of India, H.E. Mrs. Preneet Kaur, Minister of State for External Affairs, will be representing India at the funeral of the late Ethiopian Prime Minister H.E. Ato Meles Zenawi.

India and Ethiopia have a historical relationship. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1948 immediately after India’s independence. The traditionally close and friendly relations between Ethiopia and India gained enormously under the leadership and guidance of Prime Minister Meles.

Special Envoy of India visits Sudan, South Sudan and Addis Ababa

His Excellency Mr. Amarendra Khatua, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, and Special Envoy of the Government of India for Sudan and South Sudan, visited Khartoum, Juba and Addis Ababa from May 13-18, 2012.

The Special Envoy visited Khartoum from May 13-15, 2011 and met Secretary General in the Ministry of Petroleum of Government of Sudan and Special Representative of UNSG for Sudan and South Sudan, Mr. Haile Menkerios.  He also met officials of ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL), an Indian entity, based in Khartoum.

Second India-Ethiopia Foreign Office Consultations

The second India-Ethiopia Foreign Office Consultations were held on 24 January 2012 in Addis Ababa to discuss the follow up of  decisions taken at India Africa Forum Summit and at the bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.  This was the first meeting after the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s visit to Addis Ababa in may 2011. 

Indian Council of Agriculture Research signs MOU with Ethiopian Institute of Agriculture Research

A four member delegation led by h.e. Mr. Rajiv Mehrishi, Director General of the department of Agricultural Research and Education and Secretary , Indian Council of Agricultural Research, visited Ethiopia from 11/12/2011 to 13/12/2011. During the visit the delegation signed an MOU for cooperation in the field of Agricultural research and Education, in the presence of the State Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, H.E. Mr. Wondiyirad Mandefro and the Indian Ambassador, H.E.Mr. Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi. The MOU was signed by H.E. Mr. Rajiv Mehrishi from the Indian side and Dr.

India to provide humanitarian assistance to Horn of Africa nations

India will provide humanitarian assistance of US$ 8 million to the countries afflicted with severe famine and drought in the Horn of Africa i.e. Somalia, Kenya and Djibouti. The assistance will be provided through the World Food Programme.

India has also contributed US $ 1.5 million to the AU Trust Fund on Somalia and US $ 0.5 million to the UN Trust Fund. This is part of the assistance announced by Hon’ble Prime Minister for augmenting the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) at the India-Africa Forum Summit-II in Addis Ababa, in May this year.

Indians Celebrate 65th Independence day of India

The Embassy of India celebrated the 65th Independence Day of India at the Embassy premises in Arada district in Addis Ababa on August 15, 2011.  Around 200 members of the Indian community gathered, as the national flag was unfurled by the Ambassador of India, H.E. Mr. Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi.  The flag hoisting ceremony was followed by singing of the national anthem of India and some patriotic songs after which the Ambassador read out the message of the President of India delivered on the eve of the 64th Independence Day of India.
